Standard Rudders

Foss Foam Products of Florida, Inc. manufactures sailboat rudders and centerboards.  Our products are produced with a gel-coat finish and rugged fiberglass shell. Each rudder is filled with foam under pressure. Foss Foam is high density (20 PSI), closed cell, polyurethane foam. This foam core is chemically bonded to the fiberglass shell. The formula for Foss Foam was formulated by Chuck Foss in the 1960’s and still remains a trade secret to this day.  Foss Foam is light weight, extremely strong and durable, and is impervious to gasoline and diesel.

Rudder Order Guidelines

Foss Foam Products of Florida produces more rudders than any other company in the US. Our production process requires that we have a mold in order to make a rudder. Our streamlined process allows us to make top quality parts at very reasonable prices and does not require shaping. The foil shape is determined by the mold. We have over 300 molds that cover more than a 50 year time period. In most instances boat companies provided us with the mold.  If we have the original mold, details can usually be finalized by comparing the sketch we provide to your rudder.

Over the years some of the original technical information has been lost. Since we are not involved in the installation process, we miss out on some modifications that might of taken place. Manufacturers often make changes without notifying us. In order to produce the right rudder we have to ask a lot of questions. Many customers get frustrated with this process. However, what is even more frustrating and costly is making a rudder that does not fit properly because of a lack of communication or information.

Thanks,
Bob “Al” Walker
